Taos Morning

I was recently in Taos scouting out new places to paint. Returning from painting the day before I noticed a truck up on a hill outside of town that looked like a great place to paint. I wrote down about how many minutes it was from a known landmark and decided the next day I would figure out how he got up there. Good thing there was not a car following closely the next morning because the turnoff up to the hill was almost hidden by a bermed area...speed limit was 60 so I was glad I had slowed down a bit.

I was hoping I didn't loose any essential parts on the bottom of my suv as I went up the steep, rutted incline. When I got to the top I noticed it was only one lane and was wondering what I would do if someone came by after I got set up to paint. I decided I would take a chance and hopefully no one would need to get by.

I was attracted to the morning haze looking back towards Taos and of course the remaining snow in the mountains. There was a chance of snow one day while we were there and I was so excited that I got up at 2 am to check and see if I would be able to paint snow. (we don't get much snow in Dallas!) I was so disappointed when I didn't see any white stuff on the ground - the snow on the mountain tops would have to do. Can't wait to paint here again next trip!

Love the way you used the sandy areas to draw in the viewer....wonderful atmosphere. Beautiful painting.

Thanks so much Susan! It was the last painting I did before I left Taos so special memories. I can't get enough of the mountains and look forward to any opportunity I have to visit the southwest. I often find myself wanting to paint mountains in the distance when I'm outdoors in and around the Dallas area. Not so sure people would "buy" that. :-)
